## In plain language

A 2015 WHO strategy for ending preventable maternal deaths. It sets a global target of fewer than 70 maternal deaths per 100 000 live births on average by 2030, and says no country should have a ratio above 140 by then. It is a plan with targets and strategies, not a record of what was achieved.

## Technical summary

WHO global strategy dated 25 February 2015 (ISBN 978-92-4-150848-3), read from the English PDF. Targets: by 2030 all countries should reduce the maternal mortality ratio by at least two thirds from their 2010 baseline, with an average global target below 70 per 100 000 live births and a supplementary national target of no more than 140. It proposed a major interim milestone for 2020, which this record does not follow up. A 2025 WHO analysis of causes of maternal death says maternal mortality is not on track to meet Sustainable Development Goal target 3.1, a global ratio below 70 per 100 000 livebirths by 2030. A claim records the targets; the 2030 date is a target, not an event, so it is not held as a milestone. All rights are reserved on the PDF; only short quotations are used.

## Context: Global and national maternal mortality ratio targets for 2030, WHO EPMM strategy (2015)

Recipient: Maternal; Population: All countries and the world average: targets for the maternal mortality ratio (maternal deaths per 100 000 live births) by 2030, set from 2010 baseline levels.; Care setting: Not applicable: strategy targets; Geography: Global (WHO strategy); Life stage: Pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period; Gestational age: Not reported; Postnatal age: Not reported; Follow-up: Targets for 2030, with a proposed interim milestone for 2020

### WHO's 2015 strategy toward ending preventable maternal mortality says that by 2030 every country should cut its maternal mortality ratio by at least two thirds from its 2010 baseline level. The world average target is a ratio below 70 per 100 000 live births by 2030, and a second target says no single country should be above 140 per 100 000 live births. The strategy also proposes a major interim milestone for 2020.

- Applies to: Recipient: Maternal; Population: All countries and the world average: targets for the maternal mortality ratio (maternal deaths per 100 000 live births) by 2030, set from 2010 baseline levels.; Care setting: Not applicable: strategy targets; Geography: Global (WHO strategy); Life stage: Pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period; Gestational age: Not reported; Postnatal age: Not reported; Follow-up: Targets for 2030, with a proposed interim milestone for 2020
- Limitations: These are targets set in 2015, not results. A 2025 WHO analysis of causes of maternal death says maternal mortality is not on track to meet Sustainable Development Goal target 3.1, a global ratio below 70 per 100 000 livebirths by 2030. The strategy's 2020 interim milestone was not followed up here. The PDF reserves all rights, so only short quotations are used.
