## In plain language

Whether the mother died and the cause recorded was bleeding. In WOMAN this was the main cause-specific death outcome.

## Technical summary

WOMAN assessed cause-specific mortality with death due to bleeding as "the key secondary outcome". Clinicians recorded the immediate cause of death, and the main cause when there was more than one. Outcome data were collected at death, discharge or 42 days after randomisation, whichever came first (methods wording). The summary of the paper describes the composite primary endpoint as within 42 days of giving birth, a slightly different anchor; this record uses the methods wording and notes the difference.
