## In plain language

Whether the baby died before birth or soon after birth. It is one of the four parts of the CHAP primary combined outcome, which counts fetal and newborn deaths together.

## Technical summary

One of the four components of maternal:outcome-chap-primary-composite, worded as the CHAP paper's Methods words it. The paper's Methods name it without a definition. The time window differs between the sources and is not reconciled here: the paper's Table 2 row reads fetal or neonatal death at under 28 days, and the registry reads fetal death or neonatal death up to discharge or 90 days if prior. The statistical analysis plan attached to the registry record (v2.2) defines the component as fetal or neonatal death within 28 days, and the attached protocol (v1.7, section 4.7.6) says neonatal death is ascertained until 90 postnatal days for newborns not yet discharged. All of these wordings are kept side by side and not reconciled. The recipient is the fetus or the newborn, and the paper counts the event per patient.
