## In plain language

RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is a common virus that usually causes a cold. In babies it can cause serious lung infections. Nearly all children catch RSV by age 2. There is no specific treatment for RSV infection. Two ways to protect babies from severe RSV illness are a vaccine given in pregnancy and an antibody injection given to the baby.

## Technical summary

Descriptions from MedlinePlus and FDA's 2023 news release; no incidence figures are recorded. FDA calls RSV the most frequent cause of lower respiratory tract illness in infants worldwide and, citing CDC, the leading cause of infant hospitalisation in the United States. The two prevention routes in this atlas are RSV vaccination in pregnancy and an antibody given to the infant; each has its own page. The recipient differs by route.

## Claims, with the population each applies to

## Context: Infants and young children and RSV (MedlinePlus and FDA descriptions)

Recipient: Child; Population: Infants and young children, the group MedlinePlus and FDA describe as most affected by serious RSV illness. The MedlinePlus page also covers older adults and people with weakened immune systems, who are outside this context.; Care setting: Not stated (general health information and an FDA news release).; Geography: General; the FDA statement about hospitalisation names the United States; Life stage: Infants from birth, and children up to about 2 years; Gestational age: Not reported; Postnatal age: Not reported; Follow-up: Not applicable (descriptive statements)

### MedlinePlus describes RSV as a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms but can cause serious lung infections, especially in infants, and says nearly all children become infected with RSV by age 2. In very young infants the only symptoms may be irritability, decreased activity and trouble breathing. FDA's 2023 news release called RSV the most frequent cause of lower respiratory tract illness in infants worldwide and, citing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the leading cause of infant hospitalisation in the United States.

### MedlinePlus says there is no specific treatment for RSV infection. It says there are two medicines to help prevent severe RSV illness in babies and young children, that these medicines cannot cure or treat children who already have RSV, and that one of them is given to infants who are younger than 8 months during their first RSV season.
